@Boris: As a matter of fact, the software has been 100% open source since the beginning. But open-sourcing the software behind a website does not guarantee that you'll accrue a sufficiently dedicated community of volunteer programmers or support staff who care about the site or the software.

In fact, LSI Community has attracted no volunteer software support at all. Could we have put more effort into building such a community? Undoubtedly. But that's water under the bridge.

To invert the "field of dreams" catchphrase: You can build it, but in all likelihood, they will not come.

Is there a funding problem with the software itself, or with hosting and other external factors? Because if it's just a matter of finding programmers to write software, the project can be "open sourced" so that software updates and support is maintained by the open source community for free, not by paid programmers.

This is really sad to hear but sounds like a very prudent choice. For those in Seattle, Great City's Ning website is a similar online venue that members can keep in touch and engaged at. If you haven't already signed up go to the following link and sign up.

http://seattlegreatcitynetwork.ning.com/

As a contributor for the Seattle Transit Blog should also give a shout out of it. We have very lively and meaningful post and threads and we are part of the Streetsblog Network. Check it out if you haven't already.
