Livable Streets Groups Migration Instructions
The Livable Streets Community Groups site has been slated for shutdown in early April, 2010. If you are in charge of a Livable Streets Group and want to know what your options are for migrating your community and information, these instructions are for you.
When we looked at how people were using Livable Streets Groups, we found quite a wide spectrum of usage patterns. Some groups used the blog feature a lot and didn't use the Pages section at all. Some groups used the mailing lists and didn't use their blog, and so on. For this reason, we've come up with a list of sites that would be appropriate replacements for different types of groups. It may be possible that one of these sites will meet all of your needs. Some groups, though, may want to consider using more than one. Here they are:
Ning.com
Ning is a general-purpose social network site. It has a lot of advanced group communication tools like online chat, activity streams, user-to-user messaging, events, videos, photos etc. It would be a good default choice to migrate your Livable Streets Group to.
Google Groups
Google Groups is a good replacement for your Livable Streets Group if the main tool you use is the mailing lists. There is an easy way for you to import your old messages and membership information into a new Google Group. Google Groups also has the ability to write Pages to replace your Livable Streets Groups Pages.
Wordpress.com
Wordpress.com is the best online blogging platform out there. If your Livable Streets Group makes heavy use of the blog, then this may be the option for you. There is a good import/export tool that will allow you to import your existing blog posts and comments into a new wordpress.com blog. Wordpress also has Pages that could replace your Livable Streets Groups Pages.
Meetup.com
Meetup.com is a widely successful site for bringing people together in the real world for different purposes. If your group is geared towards this type of activity, then meetup.com may be a good replacement for you. The site does have a small fee for starting a new meetup group.
See this more thorough breakdown of the features.
A good way to get better acquainted with the above options is to go to the sites and look around. Also there may be other sites not listed here that would work well for your group. Please use the comments below to suggest other sites and to discuss this document for the benefit of everyone.
